Feb 19, 1997: Deng Xiaoping dies
On Feb 19, 1997, Deng Xiaoping died in Beijing at the age of 93. The CPC Central Committee, the NPC Standing Committee, the State Council, the CPPCC National Committee and Central Military Commission issued a public notice describing Deng as a great Marxist, great Proletarian Revolutionary, statesman, military strategist and diplomat. He was hailed as one of the main leaders of the Communist Party of China, the People's Liberation Army of China and the People's Republic of China. The notice described him as the great architect of China's socialist opening-up and modernized construction and the founder of Deng Xiaoping Theory. On Feb 25, 1997, Deng Xiaoping's memorial was held. Then-president Jiang Zemin praised Deng. On March 2, Deng Xiaoping's ashes were cast into the sea in accordance with the wishes of Deng and his relatives.
Feb 19, 2001: The CPC Central Committee and State Council holds National Science and Technology Awards meeting in Beijing
Jiang Zemin issued the state supreme science and technology award in 2000 to Wu Wenjun and Yuan Longping. This was the most prestigious award given to scientists who made outstanding contributions to the development of science and technology
Feb 19, 2005: Hu Jintao addresses the CPC Party School
President Hu Jintao made a speech at the opening ceremony of the symposium class at the CPC Party School and said that building a socialist harmonious society is a major task of the Party. "We are building a harmonious society which has democratic and legal systems, justice, sincerity, vitality, stability harmonious relations between human and nature," Hu said.
Zhu De, born in Yilong County of Sichuan Province in 1886 and passed away in 1976, is a great Marxist, proletarian revolutionary, statesman and military strategist.
A native of Le Zhi, in Southwest China's Sichuan Province, and awarded by the People's Republic of China the military rank of marshal; Served as the country's Vice Premier (1954-1972) and Foreign Minister (1958-1972)
