On Feb 18, 1991, Deng Xiaoping visited the construction site of Nanpu Bridge in Shanghai and then listened to the planning report for the economic development of Pudong. He said Shanghai would attract investments if the city paid attention to international practices, and that finance would be the core of a modern economy in Shanghai.
