Jan 30, 1995: President Jiang Zemin urges reunification of China

On Jan 30, 1995, President Jiang Zemin made a speech urging "promotion of the complete reunification of the motherland" while he attended a Spring Festival tea party hold by the Taiwan Work Office of the CPC Central Committee, Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council and Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League. He proposed eight principles: (a) to uphold the one China principle; (b) to have no objection on Taiwan and other countries developing non-governmental economic and cultural relations; (c) to negotiate on peaceful cross-Straits reunification; (d) to make efforts to achieve peaceful reunification, because Chinese people should not fight Chinese people; (e) to develop cross-Straits economic exchanges and partnerships to facilitate cross-Straits economic prosperity for the benefit of the entire Chinese nation; (f) to jointly promote shared Chinese cultural traditions; (g) to fully respect the way of life and ownership rights of Taiwan residents and protect all legitimate rights and interests of Taiwan residents, and (h) to welcome leaders of Taiwan to visit mainland China in appropriate capacities. "We are also willing to accept the invitation to visit Taiwan to discuss affairs of state and exchange views on certain questions first",Jiang said in his speech.
