About China Daily

China Daily is China's national English-language newspaper, which was founded in 1981 and today has a circulation more than 500,000 worldwide.

For readers at home and abroad, China Daily is a popular choice among English-language media in China. It is the only Chinese newspaper that has effectively entered Western mainstream society and is the newspaper most quoted by the foreign press. The paper also has published the largest number of supplements for international meetings in China among all media outlets. Global readers recognize China Daily as the most authoritative and influential English-language media in the country. It serves as an important window for "China to understand the world and be understood by the world".

China Daily Media Group rides the tide of the times and drives innovations. It believes that "content is king". China Daily's Traditional Media

China Daily Media Group has 12 print publications: the flagship China Daily, China Daily US Edition, China Daily Hong Kong Edition, China's National Image Journal, China Business Weekly, Beijing Weekend, Shanghai Star, 21st Century, 21st Century Teens, 21st Century English Language Teaching Review.

China Daily, the flagship newspaper founded on June 1, 1981, publishes 24 pages Monday to Friday and 16 pages on Saturday and Sunday. It uses cutting edge designs with dynamic pictures and artwork. It encompasses magazine-style in-depth reporting and analysis and helps “understand China and comment the world”.

China Daily Hong Kong Edition was founded in 1997. It was the only national newspaper licensed by the central government to publish in Hong Kong when Hong Kong returned to China. It publishes 30 pages Monday to Friday and 16 pages on Saturday.

China Daily US Edition was launched in 2009. It publishes 16 pages Monday to Friday. Its circulation includes the United Nations Headquarters, government agencies of the United States and Canada, universities, think tanks, major financial institutions and many high-tech companies.

China's National Image Journal is distributed in North America. It originates from the previous Reports from China founded in 1992. It is a six-page monthly publication distributed with the Washington Post. It reaches high-end readers in all walks of life and has a circulation of 750,000.

21st Century English newspaper series was launched in 1993. 21st Century is the most popular English education weekly for English learners and fans in China. It includes eight weekly publications for pupils, middle school and university students and teachers, with a total circulation of more than 1 million. It also has a 21st Century website and a 21st Century mobile newspaper. 21st Century English education media has become an established brand.

China Daily's New Media

China Daily's new media, with the China Daily website as its core, has built an around-the-clock, multi-channel news distribution network. It has seven website clusters and three mobile platforms, including English News, Chinese News, Business, Entertainment & Life, Language Tips, English News Interactive, as well as the China Daily News for iPad and iPhone, China Daily Mobile Website and Bilingual Mobile Newspaper of China Daily.

China Daily's iPad/iPhone application was released in September 2009 at App Store, the world's largest mobile application software store. China Daily was the first print media in China to provide information service at App Store and has been competing with other media giants, such as The New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today and the British Broadcasting Corporation.

China Daily website (chinadaily.com.cn): Launched in 1995, it is a comprehensive media outlet and China's most influential English-language web portal. It encompasses news reporting, information services, online communities and language learning. It has more than 30 subsidiary websites and 300 channels under seven website clusters. Daily page views now exceed 31 million, with about 60 percent of visitors from overseas. Many readers are internationally influential.

China Daily Mobile Portal: A fast-developing, comprehensive wireless Internet service, including a mobile website (m.chinadaily.com.cn), a mobile newspaper, a mobile terminal as well as 13 wireless terminal products. Among them there is the China Daily iPad/iPhone Application.

China Daily iPad/iPhone Application: Since 2009, the app has provided China Daily News, Video, Digest and iPaper for iPad and iPhone users as a free download. It has more than 100,000 users worldwide.

China Daily Bilingual Mobile Newspaper: China's first bilingual mobile newspaper, including the China Daily Mobile News (China Mobile version and China Telecom version) and China Daily PDF edition on China Unicom. With more than 600,000 paid subscribers, it is China's second largest mobile newspaper.

China Daily eClips: Launched in January 2007, it is distributed to 250,000 influential readers in politics, business and academics, as well as in other fields.

Asia News Photo website (asianewsphoto.com): Launched in March 2006, it was founded by China Daily, the only member media of the Asia News Network on the Chinese mainland. It represents 21 newspapers in 19 Asian countries and regions, as well as nearly 2,000 registered photographers. It has an archive of more than 2 million photos and provides Asia-focused photo service to media outlets worldwide.

Newscartoon (newscartoon.com.cn): Launched in 2001, it is hosted by the China Daily website and jointly operated with the China Journalistic Caricature Society. It is China's largest professional cartoon website, has thousands of cartoonists and illustrators contributing to it and more than 100,000 cartoons and illustrations in its archive. It provides information service, artwork display, online interaction, cartoon industry updates and cartoon event organization.

China Daily's Development

China Daily develops fast both at home and abroad. It has the largest, highly professional team in China. Its global reporting and editing system, international communication channel and media relations network are constantly growing. It keeps improving its Hong Kong and US editions, and will soon launch editions in Europe and Asia-Pacific Edition. It is also building more overseas bureaus.

China Daily plays an important role in the Asia News Network, the largest media organization of Asia, as it spreads the voice of China and Asia globally. Its headquarters in Beijing has 27 organs and its 26 branch offices are all over the country. It has a staff of more than 1,000.

China Daily has 25 bureaus and offices covering news in provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, including Beijing, Tianjin and Chongqing, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong, Fujian, Anhui, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Jilin, Shanxi, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, Yunnan, Shaanxi and Xinjiang, and also at important locations such as Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, Shenzhen and Dalian.

It also set up a bureau in Shanghai in August 2010. Before 2012 it will have an office in every province, autonomous region, municipality and city specifically designated in the State plan.

Overseas communication channels

China Daily has three companies overseas: China Daily Hong Kong Limited, China Daily US (administering the Washington DC Office, New York Bureau and San Francisco Bureau), and China Daily UK (including London Bureau and Brussels Bureau).

China Daily's overseas companies are expanding their distribution network and pushing forward the cooperation with other overseas media companies. They make great efforts to expand the readership of China Daily's US, Hong Kong and European editions, as well as other publications.

Global communication with mainstream media

China Daily uses its advantages in language, network, brand and resource to cooperate and exchange with mainstream media around the world, such as The New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today and Time Magazine in the United States, Globe and Mail in Canada, Le Figaro in France, and Financial Times and Guardian in the United Kingdom. Asia News Network (ANN) consists of 21 mainstream news organizations in 19 Asian nations and regions. China Daily is a founding member of the ANN and also its only member media on the Chinese mainland. China Daily plays a key role in the ANN, exchanges stories and people with mainstream English media in other parts of Asia, organizes events and operates its Asia News Photo website. Brand events of China Daily

China Daily builds a platform of effective global communication as it hosts its brand events such as the Beijing-Tokyo Forum, the 21st Century National English Speaking Competition, the CEO Roundtable, the Changing Asia - Asia Press Photo Competition, the University Cartoon Competition on Environmental Protection and the “100 Photographers' Focus” series of album publication. Beijing-Tokyo Forum

Founded in 2005, the Beijing-Tokyo Forum is an annual large-scale international symposium jointly sponsored by China Daily and Genron NPO, a Japanese non-profit organization. It aims to provide a non-governmental exchange platform and improve China-Japan ties through public opinion polls and high-level dialogues. It has become the highest-level public diplomatic communication platform between China and Japan.

Changing Asia - Asia Press Photo Competition

Initiated by China Daily and the Asia News Network in 2006, it is an international photo contest with a focus on Asia. It is held every year and attracts photographers from Asia and also countries in other regions, such as the United States and the United Kingdom.

University Cartoon Competition on Environmental Protection

The University Cartoon Competition on Environmental Protection, launched by Newscartoon in 2006, is an annual international competition for university students on environmental protection. It is participated by the United Nations Environment Programme, World Wildlife Fund for Nature, other international environmental and cartoon organizations, and students from universities and colleges around the world.

The 21st Century National English Speaking Competition

Founded by the China Daily 21st Century English Newspaper Series in 1996, it is the most prestigious English-speaking contest in China. It is also the qualifying contest for the annual International Public Speaking Competition in London.

The "100 Photographers' Focus"

China Daily has published five "100" news photo albums since 2003. The albums are about important events including the SARS health challenge, the freeze and snow disaster in early 2008, the May 12 Sichuan earthquake, the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. The "100 Photographers' Focus" series has become a well-known publication brand.
