Guangdong governor Ma Xingrui promised more opportunities for overseas Chinese who return to establish companies and joint ventures.

"Under the country's Belt and Road Initiative, Guangdong's investment potential is huge. We are sparing no effort to build the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area," he said.

Ma said his government, which is seeking to expand cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao to speed up the construction of free trade zones, would simplify procedures and offer more support and better service to overseas Chinese entrepreneurs.

He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the 3rd Global Conference of the Cantonese and the 2017 China (Jiangmen) Overseas Chinese Carnival on Friday.

Jiangmen is known as "the capital of overseas Chinese" because there are more than 4 million ethnic Chinese living outside the motherland who can trace their roots back to city. That makes its descendants, who now live in 107 countries and regions around the world, almost equal in number to its population of 4.5 million today.

Ma praised the role overseas Chinese played in Guangdong's reform and opening drive, and the province's modernization in recent years. He said he hoped their contribution would continue.

Tan Tianxing, deputy director of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, urged overseas Chinese to become goodwill ambassadors, acting as a bridge to expand China's contact with the rest of the world.

With the help of overseas Chinese, Jiangmen signed a total of 199 projects, with a total investment of 126.9 billion yuan ($19.52 billion) on Thursday evening. They included ventures in infrastructure, high-tech manufacturing, urban construction, culture, agriculture and tourism.

More than 2,300 government officials, business representatives and overseas Chinese from around the world are attending the conference and carnival which both end on Saturday.

Australia's Sydney will hold the 4th Global Conference of the Cantonese in 2020.
