Report identifies most popular words of 2013

A new report has identified the 364 most popular words and phrases in Chinese society in 2013, according to the Chinese language and information department under the Ministry of Education.

The full report, featuring on the language habits of Chinese society in 2013, will be published by the Commercial Press.

The list includes phrases such as the “eight-point guidelines by the CPC Central Committee (or the CPC’s frugality rules)”, tuhao, H7N9, and the “clear your plate” campaign. These phrases reflect the major undertakings in Chinese society in 2013.

Words and phrases such as dama and tuhao were added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2013 and spread outside China.

The Ministry of Education has also normalized 10 English words’ into Chinese, such as e-mail, PM2.5 and OECD.
