WASHINGTON -- As a special representative of Chinese President Hu Jintao, Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo met here on Wednesday with US Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, Tom Donilon, to discuss relations between their two countries.

Dai said that in the third round of China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) that concluded on Tuesday in Washington, the two sides, with a view to implementing the important consensus reached by the two heads of state during Hu's visit to the US in January, held extensive discussions on promoting China-US cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit, and produced important results.

He suggested that while the current China-US relations are moving forward in a positive way, the two countries take advantage of the trend by elaborately mapping out and carrying through high-level exchanges for the next stage, boosting strategic mutual trust by understanding and calculating correctly the strategic intentions of the other, respecting the core interests of the other actually, and deepening cooperation in each and every area to inject fresh strong impetus for the development of China-US relations.

Dai came to Washington along with Vice Premier Wang Qishan as Hu's special representatives to co-chair the S&ED with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, President Barack Obama's special representatives.

Extending his congratulations on the successful conclusion of the S&ED, Donilon said that it is vital for the US and China to cooperate against the challenges facing the world today, and that the United States welcomes a strong, prosperous, successful and stable China as well as respects China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He said the US will join efforts with China in implementing the results of President Hu's visit to the US and promoting US-China cooperative partnership.
