Most of them were dismissed from the Party to ensure the purity of the CPC, Wang Qinfeng, deputy head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, said at a press conference.

The Party recruited 3.07 million new members last year and the net increase in the number of Party members stood at 2.2 million. Wang said the gap was mainly due to members' dying.

Wang made the remarks in response to a question on the number of people quitting the CPC.

The CPC had 80.269 million members by the end of last year.
