Magnitude-5.2 quake jolts Yunnan, 6 injured

TENGCHONG, Yunnan - Six people were injured after a 5.2-magnitude earthquake jolted mountainous villages in remote Southwest China Monday night, toppling scores of houses and damaging roads, schools and clinics, local officials said Tuesday.

Two of the most severely injured have been transferred to a hospital in the nearby town. Both are in stable condition, said Duan Zhaojin, deputy head of the hardest-hit county of Tengchong, Yunnan province.

The epicenter of the tremor was traced to the township of Mangbang, located about 40 km away from the county seat of Tengchong.

Duan said 94 houses collapsed while 9,741 others were damaged. About 2,000 rural households in the county were affected. Over 1,000 local residents were forced to evacuate.

Firemen, police in the nearby region were mobilized while the provincial government has delivered 400 quilts and 405 tents to the quake zone.
