Cargo ship blast kills 5 in Guangdong, one hurt

GUANGZHOU - Five people were confirmed dead and another injured after a cargo vessel blast early Friday in south Guangdong province, according to local authorities.

The accident happened around 1 am when the vessel, "Nandayou 22", exploded at a dock in the township of Shilou, Panyu district in the provincial capital of Guangzhou, said a spokesman with the provincial emergency management office.

The number of people aboard the vessel when the blast occurred remains unknown.

A fire caused by the explosion was extinguished At about 2 am the spokesman said. The damaged vessel has been salvaged and towed away.
