Macao hotel occupancy rate reaches 85 pct

MACAO - The average occupancy rate of Macao' s hotels reached 85.2 percent in April 2011, with four-star hotels leading at 89.6 percent, according to figures released by the city 's Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) on Tuesday.

A total of 675,836 guests checked into local hotels and guest- houses in April 2011, up by 1.7 percent year-on-year, with the majority coming from the Chinese mainland (53.4 percent of the total) and Hong Kong (20.9 percent), the figures indicated.

The average length of stay of guests for the period held stable at 1.4 nights, same as in April 2010.

At the end of April 2011, the total number of available guest rooms of the hotel sector increased by 2.9 percent year-on-year to 20,148 rooms, with that of 5-star hotels (12,041) accounting for 59.8 percent of the total, according to the DSEC.

In the first four months of 2011, visitor-guests of the hotels and guest-houses accounted for 61 percent of the total number of tourists, higher than 60.6 percent in the same period of 2010, the DSEC said.
