Relief materials delivered to quake hit county in Xinjiang

BEIJING - China's central government has dispatched 1,000 cotton-padded tents, 2,000 quilts and 2,000 cotton-padded jackets to a quake hit county in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region on Thursday, according to a notice issued by the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

A 5.3-magnitude earthquake hit Toksun county of Turpan prefecture in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region at 9:53 am on Wednesday.

According to the report of civil affairs authority of Xinjiang, as of 7 am Thursday, the earthquake had affected 1,241 people, and damaged 1,335 rooms. Among the damaged rooms, 168 of them belonging to 50 households were severely damaged. No casualties were reported, however.

The 50 families have been relocated, according to the notice.

In addition, immediately after the quake hit, local authorities quickly allocated 1 million yuan ($154,000) of relief funds and delivered 50 tents and drinking water to the quake victims.

Toksun county is about 160 km from Urumqi, the regional capital.
