BEIJING - China on Tuesday vowed to intensify efforts to alleviate poverty in rural areas in the next 10 years, in a bid to improve people's livelihood and narrow the wealth gap.

China has made strides in poverty alleviation during the past 10 years with the poverty-stricken population decreasing and farmers' income rising steadily, according to a statement released after a central authorities meeting presided over by President Hu Jintao.

China's poverty alleviation has helped push forward the country's economic development, maintain social stability and harmony and made contributions to global poverty alleviation, the statement said.
