Urumqi, in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, plans to use its meat reserve to combat the rising prices of pork, beef, and lamb starting this week, local media reported.

The reserve meat will be sold at 47 markets, close to heavily populated communities in Urumqi. Residents will be allowed to buy up to 10 kilograms of frozen pork or beef, according to the report.

The price of beef rose by 11 percent and lamb by 20 percent from last year.
