BEIJING - China's Ministry of Culture on Tuesday said that the government would step up efforts to eradicate obscene performances in order to clean up the cultural market and ensure its healthy development.

In a statement on its official website, the ministry instructed local agencies to enhance inspection in key areas and key recreational venues, and make public cases of obscene performances.

The ministry also advised agencies to make timely progress on investigations in order to increase public supervision.

The statement came after Monday's media reports on obscene performances that featured scantily dressed people and were staged in recreational venues in parts of eastern China's Zhejiang Province.

Provincial cultural and publicity agencies in Zhejiang on Monday night dispatched personnel to find the venues responsible for the shows.

The ministry has decided to make cracking down on obscene performances one of the major tasks on its agenda this year and prevent such performances from resurfacing.
