Former senior legislator sacked after corruption scandal

BEIJING - Zhang Jiameng, former vice chairman of the Zhejiang Provincial People's Congress Standing Committee in east China, has been dismissed from the Communist Party of China (CPC) and his public office for "serious violations of discipline and laws," the CPC disciplinary watchdog announced Monday.

Zhang, 55, has been under investigation for alleged "serious violations of discipline and laws," according to a statement issued by the CPC's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI).

Zhang was found using his position to seek benefits for other people in return for a "large sum" of bribes, the statement said, without giving an exact figure.

He also violated relevant regulations by seeking benefits for his business-running relatives, according to the CCDI.

The CPC Central Committee and the State Council approved the penalties to Zhang according to the CPC's supervisory disciplinary regulations and the country's Law on Public Servants, the statement said.

His illegal gains would be confiscated and his case has been referred for prosecution, it said.
