According to a decree of the municipal government, production, storage, sales and setting-off of fireworks in all urban areas in Lhasa are restricted, while an absolute ban is enforced in the old town, areas near schools, hospitals and ancient buildings, and sites of public gathering.

Production, storage and sales of fireworks in restricted areas should get permission from the municipal workplace safety watchdog, according to the regulations.

The city decided to restrict fireworks in the form of a government decree, the first ever in Lhasa, to prevent pollution, protect state and private property and maintain social order, said the secretariat of the municipal government.

Violators will be fined from 50 to 2,000 yuan ($7.6 to 304.4) in accordance with the situations or face other punishments.

The New Year in the Tibetan calendar falls on March 5 this year.
