CHENGDU - Rescuers are trying to reach six people buried when the waste dump of a mining company collapsed and buried an apartment building in Southwest China's Sichuan province.

The accident occurred at around 7 am Sunday when the dump of a local mining company in Miyi county collapsed, said police.

Residents of two of the building's six households escaped, but six people from the remaining four households were buried by an estimated 100,000 cubic meters of stones and earth, said a spokesperson for the municipal public security bureau of Panzhihua, which administers Miyi county.
