Zhang Guangxiu graduated from university in July 2009 and began to act as a village official in the Lushang Village of Yantai City in east China's Shandong Province. She had been working hard to help villagers out of poverty even after she was diagnosed with leukaemia in September 2010.

In an instruction issued on February 14 this year, Xi said Zhang's deeds were touching and efforts should be made to publicize her example among college graduates-turned village officials, according to an official statement Xinhua got on Thursday.

Xi also asked authorities to arrange for professional medical treatment for Zhang's disease.
