A network of 7,000 surveillance cameras has been set up in southwest China's Guizhou province to help protect the public and key institutions, xinhuanet.com reported Tuesday.

Dubbed the "Skynet Project", 7,270 cameras will monitor key sections of the province such as toll stations, highway exits and entrances, roads linking counties, according to an official at a working conference held in Guizhou, capital of the province.

The project also includes an alarm monitoring system at public places like Party and government organizations, financial institutions, schools, hospitals and companies with hazardous materials.
