SHANGHAI - The weather will be "good" for the Shanghai World Expo opening ceremonies, an official with the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said Tuesday.
Shanghai's weather will be cloudy for the Expo opening ceremony late Friday and the opening ceremony for the Expo Park early Saturday, said Tang Xu, director of Shanghai Meteorological Bureau at a press conference at Expo Park, adding that such weather is good for celebrations.
Temperatures in Shanghai may be high but with a breeze, he added.
Tang said Shanghai is not going to adopt artificial weather interventions to clear the sky for the World Expo opening ceremonies.
The cloudy weather will not ruin the effects and safety of fireworks performances, he said.
The fireworks will be canceled if extreme weather hits Shanghai on the two days, he added.
Visitors can log onto www.expoweather.com or www.soweather.com to find the latest information on weather conditions at the Expo park, Tang said.
The websites can give customized advice to expo visitors from different parts of the world, he added.
Weather information is updated every half hour by an observatory in the Expo park.
Tang also said hot weather and typhoons are possible during the Expo that will run six months.
"A large part of the Expo will be held in summer and temperatures higher than 35 degrees Celsius may hit the city."
Rainstorms are also likely to affect visitors and Expo operation during the typhoon season of August and September, he added.
