SHENYANG - Continuing snow closed an airport and at least 11 highways in Northeast China's Liaoning province Sunday, local authorities said.

Taoxian International Airport in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning, was closed at about 11 am due to the thick layer of snow on the runway, the airport administration said.

Operations resumed at about 5 pm after the snow was cleared.

Almost 100 domestic and international flights were being rescheduled. The number of stranded passengers was not available.

The snow began to hit most parts of Liaoning early Saturday, leaving at least 10 highways within Liaoning and another linking Shenyang to Beijing closed for up to two days, according to the highway administration of Liaoning.

The snow abated Sunday, but light snow is expected to continue in parts of Liaoning Monday, driving down temperatures to minus 14 degrees Celsius, the latest weather forecast said.

Blizzards have also caused traffic chaos in neighboring provinces of Heilongjiang and Jilin since Saturday and a continuing snowstorm has disrupted the lives of more than 52,800 people in Inner Mongolia autonomous region in North China over the past week.
