Nine European artists recently painted graffiti on the walls of a residential building in Shanghai that is due to be demolished, angering local residents.

Residents of the six-story building tried to stop the artists, saying they were damaging the environment of their neighborhood, but to no avail.

The artists were invited to participate in the Shanghai Biennale, which plans to collect photographs of graffiti work on various traditional buildings in the city.

The artists eventually apologized for their action and admitted they should have stopped when the residents did not approve of their art.
