Dispute over coal mine leaves 9 dead in SW China

KUNMING - At least 9 people were confirmed dead and 48 others injured in a dispute over coal mine resources in southwestern Yunnan Province as of 11 pm Thursday, local authorities said.

The dispute occurred at around 9 am Thursday in Luxi county of Honghe Hani and Yi autonomous prefecture between the contractors of two mines which are close to each other, according to the local publicity department.

The injured have been sent to a local hospital for treatment.

Wang Jianfu, contractor of the Xiaosongdi coal mine, and Zheng Chunyun, contractor of the Yuejin coal mine have been kept under police custody.

Investigation into the cause of the case is underway.
