China to rev up passenger car safety check

BEIJING -- China's Ministry of Public Security said Saturday it will boost supervision of passenger car safety, as bad weather like rain and fog becomes more common in most parts of the country as winter approaches.

The ministry said in a statement police will beef up inspection of passenger cars to ensure cars are equipped with safety devices and are not overloaded.

The emphasis is on passenger cars with a seating capacity of over seven.

Police will also check the tread on cars' tyres and drivers' licenses.
