KUNMING -- About 350 people per day are donating blood in Kunming, capital city of southwest China's Yunnan Province, easing the blood shortage in the city, authorities said Saturday.

By Thursday, the blood supply in the city was enough to allow all emergency surgery and 80 percent of non-emergency surgery to proceed in the city's 260 hospitals, said Yang Tonghan, director of the Kunming blood center.

The city's blood inventory reached 250,000 cc on Friday - the highest in three months - but is still lower than the ideal amount of 300,000 to 500,000 cc, Yang said.

The cities of Beijing and Changchun and the provinces of Shandong, Shanxi and Jiangxi are also suffering acute blood shortages.

The Chinese Red Cross Society made an urgent appeal for blood donations Friday. Health Minister Chen Zhu donated blood in Beijing Friday.
