GUIYANG - A coal mine flooding accident in Southwest China's Guizhou province has killed 12 miners and injured one, authorities said Thursday.

The accident occurred in Puding county, Anshun city at 7:40 am Wednesday when 50 miners were working at a shaft of Dapo Mine in the county's Machang town, said a spokesman of the provincial coal mine safety bureau.

Thirty-eight of the miners managed to escape, and one of them was injured.

The mine managers, who had escaped after the accident, were caught Thursday morning, police said.

The cause of the flooding is under investigation.
