HARBIN - A heating pipe burst Tuesday evening in this capital city of Heilongjiang, the northernmost province of China, affecting two major districts in the city, local authorities said.

The main pipe of Harbin Huaneng Central Heating Supply Co Ltd burst at around 7 pm, and the water pressure has been declining rapidly since, said an employee at the heating supply office in Daowai district, where the company is located.

The pipe burst is expected to affect two major districts -- Daowai and Daoli -- which together have a population of about 1.5 million people.

The extent of the damage is being estimated even as repair work has begun.

The location of the pipe burst had not been found as of 11 pm.

Most parts of North China have reported sharp mercury drop since this week and the lowest temperature in Harbin, dubbed a City of Ice, was minus 6 degrees Celsius Tuesday.
