Court approves death sentence for man killing 4

GUANGZHOU -- A Chinese court Tuesday upheld the death sentence imposed on a man for the shooting to death of four people, including two policemen in south China's Guangdong Province last month.

The Guangdong Higher People's Court ratified the verdict Tuesday after reviewing the case as handled by the Intermediate People's Court in Jieyang City earlier in August.

The death penalty will now be examined by the Supreme People's Court for approval.

Hu Yihua, 29, robbed two people of 2,800 yuan in cash and two mobile phones at a cinema parking lot in Yiwu City, Zhejiang Province, on July 2. He then forced the pair to disclose the passwords to their bank accounts before shooting them dead.

Hu fled to Guangdong in their Lexus sedan. While sleeping in the sedan at a highway service zone on July 5, he was cornered by two traffic policemen in Jieyang.

He shot and killed them, too, before fleeing to the neighboring province of Fujian, where he was finally apprehended on July 8, after more than 1,000 police officers were mobilized to search for him.

Hu did not appeal after the first instance trial verdict was meted out.
