SHENYANG: Nine people were confirmed dead and nine others were injured when a real estate project in Shenyang, northeast China's Liaoning Province, caught fire Saturday.

Fire broke out at the sales office of Wanda Plaza in Tiexi District at 2:54 p.m., an officer with the city's fire brigade said.

He said fire fighters arrived at the scene within 10 minutes, evacuated about 40 people and put out the flames.

An initial investigation showed the fire started with a short-circuit on the sand table.

The plaza is a new development project of the Wanda Group, a private company that invests in real estate, hotels and department stores in many Chinese cities.

Among the dead and injured are home buyers and sales assistants.
