Commuter buses in 13 key lines on four streets of central Beijing will be equipped with 110 surveillance cameras to capture non-public transportation vehicles using the bus lanes, Beijing News reported on Aug 26.

A series of measures will be adopted to crack down on 10 serious traffic violations such as driving under the influence of alcohol, running a red light and non-public transportation vehicles taking up the bus lane, a statement released on Wednesday said.

Song Jianguo, head of the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau, said 604 people died of traffic accidents in Beijing as of Aug 23, 2010. Although the death toll is 12 fewer than that in the same period last year, traffic safety faces big challenges because of the growing number of cars in Beijing.

The number of vehicles registered in use has increased by 450,000, reaching 4.47 million, and the number of non-motor vehicles, such as bicycles, reached 5 million. In addition, 380,000 more cars travel in and out of Beijing every day.
