BEIJING - A total of 4,853 people died in more than 17,000 road accidents in China in July, down 7.3 percent and 8.1 percent on a year-on-year basis, respectively, the Ministry of Public Security said in a statement here Friday.

Economic losses caused by last month's accidents totaled 70 million yuan ($10.3 million).
Separately, the ministry warned of increased traffic in the near future as students around the country return to school for the fall semester.
The ministry also warned people about heavy rain and high temperatures, which may increase traffic safety risks.
