A prison in South China's Guangdong province has stirred huge public interest after investing about US$ 3 million to set up a monitoring system aimed at preventing suicides, Nanfang Daily reported today.

The system includes a control center and 29 branches, covering every place inside the prison and monitors the video, alarm, entrance guard and communication information around the clock.

"The monitoring system provides sound evidence once there are abnormal deaths in the prison. It helps the concerned to know the truth," said Lai Guozhu, the head of the Huizhou prison. The system is reportedly going to be introduced across the whole province.
