Police in East China's Anhui province broke up a gang of criminals with 61 arrests, July 16, 2010. The gang had been active since late 1990 and their crimes numbered 118.

60,000 yuan ($8,855)

Zhao Zuohai, a villager from Central China's Henan province, gave his future daughter-in-law 60,000 yuan in betrothal gifts before his son's upcoming wedding on July 17, the Qianjiang Evening News reported. Zhao was wrongly jailed for about 10 years for murder, and was given 650,000 yuan ($95,926) as State compensation in May.

A drug addict under detention was confirmed dead on June 21 during treatment in a local drug rehabilitation center in Maoming city, South China's Guangdong province, the Guangzhou Daily reported. The dead, surnamed Ke, was alleged to have died of drug overdose. The cause of his death is under investigation, said local authority.

The World Urban Research Base was established in Beijing at the China Academy of Social Sciences on July 15, the Beijing Times reported. The man, surnamed Shao, owned a grocery store near a local primary school in Fugou County in Central China's Henan province. According to the local court his behavior constituted the crime of child molestation.

An 11-year-old boy ran three kilometers in the rain to the police station to turn in 2,000 yuan he found, the Chongqing Evening News reported. The boy, Yu Changshuai, is a student in Kaixian county of Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality. His father is blind in the left eye and his right eye is in need of medical treatment.

China's leading expert in space technology, Qi Faren, told an audience in Chengdu on Wednesday that China plans to launch a high-thrust carrier rocket in the year 2014, with the carrying capacity of 20 tons, the Chengdu Business Times reported.
