More than 20,000 people have shared rewards of 1.1 billion yuan ($160 million) for crime tips by China's law enforcement over the past 12 years, said an official Monday, Beijing Youth Daily reported.

Ke Hanmin, deputy procurator-general, added at the press conference that from January last year to May this year, 210 million yuan in rewards have been given to 3,219 crime-related informants.

Over the past year, the tip-off hotline for 31 provincial law enforcement organizations has received 315,770 calls, 30,811 of which were taken by the police.

Cases filed for investigations involving clues from the public accounted for 70 percent of the total number.

Law enforcement groups are encouraging the public to continue to provide information about crimes, offering rewards of up to 200,000 yuan or more for each case.
