A Chinese film director has been taken to hospital for heavy injuries after being attacked with knives in Beijing on Tuesday, the Beijing News reported Thursday.

Yan Po, 43, was hacked by four men before getting into his car at a public underground parking lot of a shopping mall in Chaoyang district of Beijing, the newspaper said, citing Lu Chuan's blog on Sina.com. Lu is a well-known Chinese film director.

"A young filmmaker was heavily injured by hacking," Lu revealed on the blog. Lu's assistant later told a reporter that the "filmmaker" referred to Yan.

Police are investigating the incident, but no further information about the assailants is known. But In his blog, Lu speculated gang organizations are behind the attack and "they have started to take control of China's film industry."

The report said Yan was busy preparing for his new film, which made its debut Tuesday before the attack.

Who's behind the attack?

Besides the Mafia-like criminal forces that were responsible for Yan Po's bloody injuries, another version emerged of the story of the director who was attacked, the Beijing News report said.

It centered on a popular mainland actress Li Xiaoran, who was reported to be taking care of Yan all the time in hospital. The rumor raised speculations that Li's boyfriend was offended by Yan, who was notorious for sneaking around.

But Li's agent refused to encourage that version, by saying, "Isn't the official saying unveiled? We don't have much to say, for it is unclear about the whole case."
