About 1,400 prisoners in East China's Jiangxi province have been released from jail before their sentences were over, the chinanews.com.cn reported today.
It's part of a sentence mitigation program started in June 2009 by the Judicial Department of Jiangxi province. Of the 1,400 prisoners released so far, 632 are elderly, 160 are handicapped, and 604 are severely ill, said Ma Chengzu, director of the department.
The Jiangxi prison administrative system also works with social welfare agencies to help released prisoners get welfare and health care.
Up to now, 46 homeless prisoners have been settled well through this cooperation.
