HONG KONG - In light of situation in Bangkok, Thailand, a spokesman for the Hong Kong government on Saturday urged residents to avoid all travel to Bangkok while the Black Outbound Travel Alert for Thailand (Bangkok) was still in force.

The city's Security Bureau together with other relevant government bureaux and departments are closely monitoring the situation in Bangkok and surrounding areas.

They have been in close liaison with the Office of the Commissioner of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong and the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, he added.

The HK government issued the Black Outbound Travel Alert for Thailand (Bangkok) on April 10.

The black alert is the highest level of Hong Kong's three-sign Outbound Travel Alert system, indicating a "severe threat" exists and all travel to the destination should be avoided.

Hong Kong's outbound travel alert system came into effect in October last year. It uses amber, red and black to differentiate between different levels of risk. It covers 60 countries and regions which are the most popular travel destinations for local people.
