Woman in Shanghai embezzles for lesbian lover

BEIJING - A cashier who embezzled more than 3.4 million yuan ($497,800) in company funds to support her lesbian partner and a half-dozen of her friends has been sentenced to seven years in prison, Jing'an District judges said on Wednesday.

The woman in her 40s, identified as Ya, turned herself in to police in January after realizing she couldn't cover the hole any more, and returned 340,000 yuan.

She said she began living with her girlfriend, a prostitute, in 2007. Six of the prostitute's friends, also prostitutes, often came to their residence.

The friends constantly complained of their poverty and Ya began supporting them. "In addition to daily expenses, I had to give the seven some 100,000 yuan in cash each month," Ya told the court. "I wanted to stop the mistake many times but I couldn't get rid of my girlfriend."
