8 killed in highway traffic accident in E China

JINAN - Eight people were killed and two others injured in a traffic accident in east China's Shandong province Monday, police said Tuesday.

A truck from central China's Anhui province collided with a van and hit villagers and road maintenance workers on a section of highway at 7:10 pm Monday.

Seven people were killed at the scene and one of the three injured died later in a hospital. Two of the injured are in a stable condition.

According to police, a van loaded with potatoes hit a highway guardrail and spilled its potatoes. Later, some villagers and highway workers were helping to clear the road and repair the van when the truck crashed into them.

Police are investigating the accident.
