Shenzhen hit by lightning 683 times in 8 hours

Lightning lit up the sky 683 times within 8 hours over Shenzhen with accompanying heavy rains, on Wednesday evening, a local newspaper reported Thursday.

Starting at 8:00 pm, rains fell with an average of 20mm to 40mm across the city, and the most severely affected area was Nanshan district, with 66 mm of rain.

It wasn't until 9:50 pm that the local meteorology center called off the yellow-rainstorm and early warning signal. The meteorology center also predicted a second round of severe lightning and rainfall for May 22 to May 23, 2010.
