The detention was approved at a meeting of chairmen of the standing committee of the Chongqing People's Congress on February 3, sources with the standing committee said Thursday.

Chongqing Public Security Bureau started investigating Wang Neng, chairman of Chongqing Yuxi Bandao Limited, in October 2009, after receiving tip-offs accusing Wang being involved in gang crimes.

Police have gained evidence indicating Wang's involvement in crimes including blackmailing, illegally selling guns, forcing deals, and intentional injury after 3 months of investigation, sources said.

The investigation of Wang is ongoing.
