SEOUL - Chairman of South Korea's ruling Grand National Party (GNP) Chung Mong-joon will be visiting Beijing and Shanghai later this month at the invitation of the Chinese Communist Party, the party said Friday.

He will leave for China on March 25 for a four-day visit to the country, for the first time as a governing party leader.

Chung, a political heavyweight and a business mogul, will meet with high-ranking communist party officials to discuss on strengthening bilateral ties between China and South Korea, nuclear issues on the Korean Peninsula and other current affairs in the region, according to the GNP.

The lawmaker is also scheduled to visit the Shanghai World Expo.
