Officials in Chongqing police bureaus have been told to re-bid for their posts in a thorough-and-through overhaul, barely 20 days after their former chief was jailed for protecting gangs, the China National Radio reported on Tuesday.

"We are now under registration phrase. The whole process (makeover), not publicly disclosed yet, is expected to wrap up around middle April," an anonymous police officer said, confirming a classified document obtained by CNR.

The initial CNR report said the local deputy officials were ordered to resign before their rebids.

However, soon after the report went online, Wang Lijun, the newly appointed Chongqing police chief, came out on Tuesday afternoon to refute the claim, saying the re-bids were merely due to "the expiration of their six-year tenures".

Wang's predecessor Peng Changjian was jailed for life on February 24 for protecting local gangs amid an ongoing crime crackdown in the southwestern city.
