CHENGDU: Four people were missing after their boat capsized in a river in southwest China's Sichuan province Friday morning, the local government said.

The privately-owned boat capsized in the Jialing River, a tributary of the Yangtze River, China's longest waterway, in Nanchong city at 9 am, a local government spokesman said.

The four people on board, from Yong'an town in Gaoping district, were heading for Jiangling district on the other side of the river, the spokesman said.

The spokesman did not identify the missing people.

Rescue work continued Friday afternoon.
