More than 1,600 young people gathered at Shanghai Grand Theater on September 19, 2009 afternoon to launch a campaign on creating hand gestures for volunteers of the World Expo 2010, which will open in the city next May.

Originated from a video clip made by Wang Yong, a young film director, the campaign is designed to attract young people from all walks of life to help create signature hand gestures for Expo volunteers to express their common desire and to say “welcome” to all visitors to the World Expo.

In the video, a group of young people from the Shanghai Media Group choreographed a serial of hand gestures to indicate the words “V2010” accompanied by pulsating music. Later the video appeared on many Websites and attracted wide attention particularly from young people.

Wang said the campaign aims not only at creating simple hand gestures to help identify the Expo volunteers themselves, but also boosting the volunteering spirit at the world event.

Many young pop stars, including Song Xiaobo, a popular deaf-mute star, appeared at the gathering and vowed their support to the campaign. Some Australian dancers from the "Burn the Floor" troupe now touring the country also came to show the hand gestures they have created for the Expo volunteers.

People can learn more about the campaign at shoushi.nowyoung.cn or upload videos of their creation of hand gestures to the Website. The Website is in Chinese.
