With the Shanghai World Expo approaching within a year, the Shanghai Automobile Industry Group (SAIG) produced nearly a thousand new vehicles that incorporate the latest in environmentally conscious technology.

The Shanghai government vowed to support the research and development of vehicles that consume alternative fuels in a ceremony to introduce the group's new high-tech vehicles today.

The total investment will exceed 12 billion yuan ($1.76 billion), according to People.com.cn.

At the Shanghai Auto Show in April, SAIG showcased its first battery-powered cars, which were well received by the audience.
