China basically forms legal system - Wu

BEIJING - China has basically completed the formation of a socialist legal system with Chinese characteristics, top legislator Wu Bangguo said Saturday.

There are laws to cover basically every area of economic, political, cultural and social activities in the country, said Wu, chairman of Standing Committee of the 10th National People's Congress (NPC), while delivering a report on the work of the 10th NPC Standing Committee.

The 10th NPC Standing Committee accomplished the goal to establish the basics of a socialist legal system, which was set up when the standing committee began its term five years ago, said Wu.

Chinese leaders Hu Jintao, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Zeng Qinghong, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang attended the second plenary meeting of the First Session of the 11th NPC Saturday afternoon.

There are 229 laws currently in force in China, divided into seven types including the Constitution and related laws, civil and commercial laws, administrative laws, economic laws, social laws, criminal laws, and litigation and non-litigation procedure laws.

The 10th NPC Standing Committee completed a number of important legislative items during the past five years, including the Constitution amendment, Anti-Secession Law, Law on Property Rights, Enterprise Bankruptcy Law, among others, according to Wu.
