Son's firecrackers staunch snores but prompt beating

A 10-year-old boy got so sick of his father's snoring that he let off more than 10 firecrackers at noon last Saturday to wake him up and stop the racket.

The boy's father was, as usual, the worse for drink when he nodded off in his bedroom in Meihekou, a city in Jilin province, and began "sawing logs." The firecrackers his son lit, one by one, did the trick. But the boy's disgruntled father gave his son such a severe beating for injuring one of his toes that the boy ran off and stayed away from home for hours.

He and his father may now be reconciled only under the mediation of a police officer.
