A businessman in Panjin, Liaoning Province, had to buy three mobile phones to carry out his work after woodpeckers damaged the cable wire of his home fixed-line telephone, causing crossed lines.

Many rural residents also experienced crossed lines on their home phones after the birds damaged kilometres of communication cables.

As the local ecosystem has improved, the number of birds in the area has increased in recent years. But preventing more cables from being damaged by the birds is proving a headache for authorities.
